Film or Files?

Analog or Digital - Your Choice

As the graphic design and publishing industries evolve digitally, individual photo buyers are adopting different workflows; some still require film while others no longer will accept any film at all. To best serve these different preferences and workflows, Outsight Photography offers original transparencies, reproduction grade film dupes, or digital scans. Here's your options for submissions and final production image delivery:

Submissions

Film - Original film is available for those who prefer viewing and editing on a lightbox or require the reproduction consistency afforded by having all scans done by the same person or service. (Film recipients are typically responsible for shipping costs as well as assume liability of up to $2000 per damaged or lost originals while in their possession.)

Via Email - Small selections of jpeg thumbnails can be sent for review. I try to limit email submissions to under 500KB in size so as to not overwhelm your inbox or any mail servers along the way.

Custom Web Page (Lightbox) - This is better for larger collections of images or if you don't have a broadband connection. (Nobody on dial-up access appreciates 2MB emails!) An added benefit of viewing photos on an Outsight Custom Web Page is that the page doubles as an order form allowing you to quickly select and request only those images for which you want film, comps or high res scans sent.

Free Comps - Whether you've requested a thumbnail submission or used the online image search, you can request larger low res files for a better look or FPO layout uses.

Outsight Insight: As of 2007, I'm still shooting film exclusively and expect to do so for a few more years for several reasons. Hence, film is available for every image in the Outsight photo stock. Although low-res scans and thumbnails have been made of thousands of images, the very best image selection is still film based. You should also be aware that the searchable online image database contains only a portion (currently about 20%) of the entire photo stock. This means there's a far greater choice of images, digitized or not, in-house than online.

Image Delivery

When it's time for production you can request:

Film - Original transparencies are available (you assume liability for their care and are responsible for shipping costs). Reproduction quality dupes can be provided for an additional fee.

In-House High Resolution Scans - You can request custom 24 bit RGB scans at your size and resolution specifications for a fee of $1.00 per megabyte up to 55MB (roughly the file size of a double page spread @300dpi). There is a $5.00 minimum per image scanned. (See below to calculate file sizes and scanning fees). Customs scans are spotted (cleaned of dust and scratches) and minor level adjustments are made. Final levels/curves/contrast/color adjustments and necessary sharpening are left for your prepress people to perform. High quality Jpegs can be delivered electronically via the internet free of charge . Uncompressed Tiff image files (or Jpegs) can also be burned onto a CD and sent. There is a $10 CD burn fee plus postage or courier fee for its delivery.
